Biographical Information

Born in Canada. According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he served as a captain in Co. C of the 7th Ohio Infantry, enlisted 4/22/1861, and was "mustered out 17 June, 1861 to accept app't as Cap. Co. C - 7 OVI - 3 yr. Resigned 18 Mar. 1863 to organize 5th U.S.C.T. 1st colored troops in Oh. Was POW (prisoner of war) Aug. 1861 to Aug. 1862. Made BBG (brevet brigadier general) March 1865."
