Biographical Information

Mystery: according to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he served as a "substitute," "unassigned" private in the 5th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery, having enlisted on 2/2/1865 but "no further record found"; according to the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System database, <http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm>, "Reuben Turner" served as a private in the 5th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery (no company specified) and "Rubin Turner" served as a private in Co. G of the 3rd U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery; "Reuben Turner" is listed on Oberlin's Soldiers' Monoment as having served in the "3rd USCA" and as having "died in the service of our country"; but on the difficult-to-decipher military marker for "Ruben" Turner in Q-01B-00 which is not on the Westwood map or printout is the inscription "Co. F? / 25? U. S. C. I. U.S. Colored Infantry". Is these all the same man? Other information taken from the Westwood printout; check the original burial register for additional data. See also the mention of Reuben Turner on p. 52 of William E. Bigglestone, They Stopped in Oberlin: Black Residents and Visitors of the Nineteenth Century (Scottsdale, AZ: Innovation Group, 1981); and see Bigglestone, pp. 202-203 for a brief biography, which includes the fact that he was adopted by Delilah Evans Copeland (U-114-04).
