Biographical Information

Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, has no additional information on him, except to note the name "Nichols, Nathan" under "Misc. Info" and to note burial in "Potters Field Gr 69." According to the Westwood printout, "Nathan Nichols" was buried on 10/28/1875 in Lot 1, Grave 69 of Potters' Field. The closest name in the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System database, <http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/regiments.htm>, is "Nace Nicholas" of Co. H, 26th U.S. Colored Infantry, who entered as a private and was promoted to corporal. A brief biography of Nathan Nichols, a former slave, appears on pp. 33 & 159 of William E. Bigglestone, They Stopped in Oberlin: Black Residents and Visitors of the Nineteenth Century (Scottsdale, AZ: Innovation Group, 1981).
