According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he served as a private in Battery E, 1st Ohio Light Artillery, enlisted on 8/31/1862, and was "discharged at Nashville, Tn. on surgeon's certificate of disability" on 2/2/1863.
