Biographical Information
Lt. Herbert Kenaston served in the Union Army during the Civil War in the 11th U.S. Regular Infantry. Some info taken from his mother, Sarah Kenaston's pension application in 1889 states: "Killed in action 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA." Further reseach found that he died when attempting to rescue Captain Thomas Barrie who had been shot during the battle in the Wheatfields at Gettysburg, Adams County, PA on July 2, 1963. Unfortunately, a volley from the confederate forces found their mark and took Herbert and 5 other soldiers down. He died within minutes after being hit. It took almost 6 years before his remains were returned to his parents, David & Sarah Kenaston in Ohio for burial. --Find a Grave
