According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he served as a private in Co. H of the 43rd Ohio Infantry, enlisted on 10/11/1861, and was discharged on 12/5/1862, "at Cincinnati, Oh., on surgeon's certificate of disability."
