Biographical Information
According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he served as a lieutenant in the 44th U.S. Colored Infantry and died on 3/31/1868 at age 30 years, 13 days. According to the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System database, <http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm>, he served as first lieutenant. According to an unsourced newspaper clipping, "List of Soldiers Buried in Westwood Cemetery," on the Oberlin Public Library Westwood microfilm reel, "Lieut. Wm. Michener, 44th U.S.C.T. died of disease contracted in the army." His name is inscribed on Oberlin's Soldiers' Monument.
