A brief biography in William E. Bigglestone, They Stopped in Oberlin: Black Residents and Visitors of the Nineteenth Century (Scottsdale, AZ: Innovation Group, 1981). According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he served as a private, having enlisted on 3/3/1865, and was "absent in hospital 24 Apr. 1865. No further record found. .According to an unsourced newspaper clipping, "List of Soldiers Buried in Westwood Cemetery," on the Oberlin Public Library Westwood microfilm reel, "Scipio Torrence, 27th U. S. C. T. died from disease contracted in the service." His name is inscribed on Oberlin's Soldiers' Monument. Check the original burial register for his age at death. According to Burton W.
