Biographical Information

According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he served as a private in Co. F of the 103rd Ohio Infantry, enlisted on 8/6/1862, and was discharged on 6/12/1865 ("Mustered out at Cleveland, Oh. to date by order of War Dept."). Information on the Steele family is in, among other places, "Another Honored Citizen Gone," Oberlin News, May 2, 1905, pp. 1ff, and Wilbur H. Phillips, Oberlin Colony: The Story of a Century (Oberlin, Ohio: n.p., 1933), esp. pp. 218-239.
