Biographical Information
According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, "Daniel Cheatham" served as a private in Co. K of the 5th U.S. Colored Infantry, enlisted on 8/4/1864, and was discharged on 9/20/1865. A brief biography appears on pp. 42-43 of William E. Bigglestone, They Stopped in Oberlin: Black Residents and Visitors of the Nineteenth Century (Scottsdale, AZ: Innovation Group, 1981). The surname on the marker appears to be a carver's error, and the surname "Greateh" on the Westwood printout appears to be a typographical error, for the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System database, <http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm>, has an entry for "Daniel Cheatham" but not for either "Daniel Cheatem" or "Daniel Greateh." Check the original burial register for the death/burial date; according to Bigglestone, he died in Oberlin of consumption in March 1869.
