Biographical Information

According to Burton W. Nesbitt, volunteer Lorain County coordinator for the National Graves Registration Project of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, he enlisted on 1/6/1864 and was "trf'd to 23 U.S.C.T. 18 Oct. 1864." According to the list of "African-American Civil War Soldiers Buried in Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin, Ohio," at <http://www.geocities.com/oberlinaagenealogy/AACWSoldiers.html>, he also served in Co. B and Co. D of the 23rd USCT. A brief biography of this former slave appears on pp. 98-99 of William E. Bigglestone, They Stopped in Oberlin: Black Residents and Visitors of the Nineteenth Century (Scottsdale, AZ: Innovation Group, 1981).
